Action A2: Collect, evaluate and map the air pollution characteristics of ecosystems/vegetation in the partner municipalities

Responsible: CREA

This action will provide geo-located information of urban and peri-urban green areas/ecosystems in the partner municipalities (Bologna, Madrid and Milan) based on knowledge already available from the scientific literature, European and national databases, satellite data, and partner municipalities.

The outcome of this action will also contribute to enhance the public and stakeholders' awareness on the extension and characteristics of vegetated areas and their role in air pollution in the context of the existent anthropogenic emissions and in thermal regulation.

Expected results

  • Critical analysis of different sources of information available to quantify the vegetation in urban areas
  • References/methodologies for estimating vegetation characteristics relevant for air pollution
  • Development of a methodology to map vegetation in target urban areas prone to O3 (Ozone) and PM (Particulate Matter) exceedances. This will support further analysis aimed at evaluating plant-atmosphere interactions (e.g. impact on natural ventilation patterns, adsorption, transformation, emission of air pollutants)
